What is a Zero Carbon Home?
The Code for Sustainable Homes developed a sustainability rating system with code levels being used to communicate the overall sustainability performance of a home. A home can achieve a sustainability code rating from 1 to 6 depending on the extent to which it has achieved the Code level standards.
Though above current building regulations, Code level 1 is the entry level on the sustainability system and Code level 6 is the highest level; this is a Zero Carbon Home and reflects an exemplar development in sustainability terms.
Nine categories are included and measured under the Code to determine a home’s code level rating. These are:
- Energy/CO2
- Water
- Materials
- Surface water run-off
- Waste
- Pollution
- Health and well-being
- Management
- Ecology

Zero Carbon and 2016
By law and by 2016 every new home built must be designed and constructed to achieve Code level 6 or the Zero Carbon Home rating.
